Monolingual Policy at Schools in Germany
In Germany a debate about language and inclusion policy was sparked off in January when the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet made public that a secondary school in Berlin committed all pupils to speak German not only in classes, but also during breaks and on all school related occasions. German is the second language for most pupils at the school. The school management argued that the regulation was meant to further school success and inclusion of pupils with migrant background. This policy has been attacked as xenophobic by some as well as defended as a measure of enhancing the career prospects of migrant children by others.

Project partners provide a critical view on monolingual education:

Language and Education in Germany by Inci DirimAn understanding of the current European discourse can be deepened with international comparison.
